What to fix so AI tools recommend your business

AI tools answer “who should I hire” with names, and they mostly repeat what the pages they read say. The fixes below are in the order that usually matters most.

1. Get onto the pages the answers read

When someone asks for a recommendation, the answer is built mostly from other people's pages: “best of” lists, directories and marketplaces, Reddit threads and competitors' guides. If those pages put a business forward, the AI tends to repeat it. In our own check of 135 answers, “best of” lists showed up in 82, directories and marketplaces in 73, and Reddit threads in 42.

Look at the sources an AI answer cites for your buyers’ question, and start with the one where your business is missing.

2. Say plainly on your own site what you are and where

Being read is not the same as being recommended. An answer can link your site and still name someone else. In our own check, our site was linked in 34 of 135 answers and our name appeared in 3. Near the top of your home page, say in plain words what kind of business you are, where you work, and who you help, the way a customer would ask for it.

3. Check that what AI says about you is right

Ask ChatGPT and Perplexity about your business by name. If an answer states a wrong price, a service you don't offer or an old address, fix it at the source: your own pages first, then the listings and profiles the answer cites.

4. Ask again in a few weeks

AI answers change from one ask to the next and from week to week. Re-run the same questions after you act, so you can see whether the names in the answers changed. You can run the free check in ChatGPT again; a saved result is reused for 7 days.

We are deciding whether to offer weekly tracking of these questions. If you would use it, tell us and we will let you know if it launches.

The full AI Answer Check

The free check asks a few questions once on ChatGPT and Perplexity. The full AI Answer Check covers 12 to 15 of your buyers' questions, each asked 3 times on ChatGPT, Perplexity and Gemini, who gets named instead, which sites the answers read, any wrong facts about you, and the three fixes worth the most, in a written report Matt Turley reads before it goes out.
